Rapper Tory Lanez has been found guilty of three firearms offences in connection with the shooting of hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in Hollywood Hills in 2020.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The incident left Megan Thee Stallion injured with bullet fragments in her feet.
The convictions carry a potential prison sentence of up to 22 years for Lanez. During the trial, Lanez’s lawyer claimed that the shots were actually fired by a friend of Megan Thee Stallion, Kelsey Harris, during a jealous altercation.
Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, testified that the argument between the two had become particularly heated when she began insulting Lanez’s music.
Harris denied being the shooter and identified Lanez as the one holding the gun. Prosecutors praised Megan Thee Stallion for her bravery in coming forward about the incident and characterized her as a victim of domestic violence.
Since the incident, Megan Thee Stallion has enjoyed significant success, including a Grammy award for best new artist in 2021 and numerous number-one singles on the Billboard charts.
