The first official trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water, has been released. It will be released 13 years after the first Avatar.

So, what’s the reason for this huge delay?

1. Motion capture technology needed to catch up

Firstly, because Avatar: The Way of Water is focused on the oceans of Pandora, and the various creatures within it, James Cameron, who is no doubt a visionary and a genius, wanted to adapt the motion capture technology to be able to use it underwater. This required serious advancements in motion capture technology, which took several years to happen. Therefore, this demand from Cameron necessitated a significant delay in the start of the filming.

2. Avatar 2 was being shot alongside Avatar 3

Eventually, filming for the motion picture began in 2017 once the underwater motion capture technology was available.

The shoot lasted three years because the movie was shot alongside Avatar 3, which added to the unusual length of the process. Then, after which the movie eventually went into the post-production stage, where the visual effects were worked on.

Avatar: The Way of WaterThe description in the trailer reads:

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

The first Avatar film was released on 17 December 2009. It broke records then, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time and the fastest movie to gross $1 billion through to $2.5 billion.
