Hugh Jackman has recently opened up about his journey towards improving his mental health, including seeking therapy to address unresolved trauma from his mother leaving when he was eight years old. 

The actor, who recently starred in the film The Son, which addresses depression and mental health struggles, spoke about the importance of having support, stating “we all need a village.” 

He also mentioned the impact therapy has had on his relationships, helping him to better understand and support the people he loves. Jackman has previously spoken about his relationship with his mother and the challenges he faced after she left when he was a child. 

Despite these struggles, he has since reconciled with his mother and the two have a “good relationship.” It’s important to prioritize and prioritize mental health, and Jackman’s willingness to share his own journey is a reminder that seeking help is a sign of strength.

Jackman has long been open about his experiences with mental health, particularly the impact of his mother’s departure on his well-being. In an interview with The Sun in 2011, he shared that his mother had undiagnosed postnatal depression when she left him and his siblings at the age of eight. 

Despite feeling “furious” with her at the time, he has since gained an understanding of her struggles and the two have made peace. In a 2012 interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, 

Jackman further elaborated on his mother’s experiences with postnatal depression and the lack of support available to her at the time. He stressed that while he may have felt abandoned, he never doubted his mother’s love for him.

It is admirable that Jackman is using his platform to raise awareness about the importance of seeking help and support for mental health. 

By speaking openly about his own journey, he is helping to destigmatize seeking therapy and reminding others that it is a sign of strength to prioritize and take care of one’s mental well-being.

Jackman has also spoken about the importance of seeking help and support from others in managing mental health. 

In his interview with Who magazine, he emphasized the value of having a therapist who is “a little bit removed from your world” and able to provide objective perspective and guidance. 

He also highlighted the impact therapy has had on his relationships, stating that it has helped him to be “more relational with the people I love in my life.”

Jackman’s experience on the set of The Son further emphasized the importance of addressing and supporting mental health in the workplace. 

He revealed that the film’s producers hired on-set psychiatrists for the cast and crew, and that these resources were utilized and greatly appreciated.
