Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, to Maye Musk (née Haldeman), a model and dietitian originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Errol Musk, a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, and sailor. He has a younger brother, Kimbal, and a younger sister, Tosca. His maternal grandfather, Joshua Haldeman, was a Canadian attorney.

Musk attended the English-speaking boarding school Pretoria Boys High School. He then briefly attended the University of Pretoria before moving to Canada in 1989 at age 17 to attend Queen’s University.
